Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) pays for basic medical services for most Ontario residents. You should apply for OHIP as soon as you arrive. To apply, you must go in person to an OHIP office. Use this list from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to find the nearest office.
When you go to the OHIP office, you will need to complete an application form. You must also provide original documents that prove your immigration status, residency and identity.

When your application has been accepted, you will receive a Health Card with your photograph on it.

There is a three-month waiting period from the time you apply for OHIP until you are covered. You should consider buying health insurance from a private company during this period

  • Introduction to Driving (Ontario)
An Ontario driver's licence is your proof of your privilege to drive. You must carry it with you whenever you drive. Ontario has introduced a one-piece plastic driver's licence. The licence has a digitized photograph and signature of the driver and a magnetic information strip.

A driver's licence includes your name, address, signature, date of birth, gender, height, licence class, licence issue and expiry dates, and codes showing which class of vehicles you may drive and under what conditions (for example, an "X" condition means you need to wear glasses/contacts for driving). If you have a red bar with four white dots under your photograph, it indicates that you qualify to be an accompanying driver under the graduated licensing program.

If you live in Ontario, you must be at least 16 years old and have a valid Ontario driver's licence to drive in the province. A newcomer to Ontario who holds a driver-license from another province or country is required to apply for an Ontario driver's licence within 60 days of taking up residence in the province.

We carry 44 million passengers a year in an extensive network of train and bus services that is one of North America’s premier transportation systems. Since we began operating in May 1967, more than three-quarters of a billion people have taken the GO Train or the GO Bus. Permanent Resident Card

As of December 31, 2003, the PR card will be the proof of status document required by permanent residents seeking to re-enter Canada on a commercial carrier (airplane, boat, train or bus).

As of December 31, 2003, permanent residents returning to Canada without a valid PR card will not be permitted to board their carrier. They will have to contact the nearest Canadian visa office to obtain a limited use travel document to re-enter Canada at a cost of $50 for each one.
